Salvation Army Crest

Fun

After the carnival the Band had a short coach journey onto Poole where we were again served delicious food before the festival of music.

The evening festival was compered by Lt. Col. S J Smith who is Principal Director of Music (Army) who added to the evening with his obvious charm and humour. The programme by Derby Central Band included a cornet solo “so Glad” by David Purkiss, Soprano feature “Ave Maria” by Alan Fox (This piece has been arranged for Derby Central Band by Graham Eacott who plays Trombone in the band) vocal solo “You raise me up” by Andy Ward and Euphonium solo “there will be God” by Darren Willis who received rapturous applause after playing a super F as his final note!

Exhausting, yet enjoyable would best describe our visit to Ringwood / Poole.

Upon our arrival we enjoyed a delicious meal, cooked for us by the corps folk of Ringwood, which we then had opportunity to walk the calories off as the band took part in the town carnival.

In among Dr. Who characters, Captain Jack Sparrow, Big cook, Little cook and other lorries adorned with all kinds of characters and celebrations Derby Central Band marched around the town of Ringwood, playing about ten marches which included “In the Kings Service, Cairo Red Shield, Amsterdam Congress and Rosehill.” The paths were flooded with people watching the carnival and hopefully they enjoyed the playing of the band, reminding them that the Salvation Army is operating in Ringwood and surrounding areas.

After the festival the band retired to their billets to rest, a special thank you to all people from both Ringwood and Poole who took our bandsmen into their homes for the weekend and made us all feel welcome and rested ready for Sunday.

Sunday morning started with a prayer meeting led by Stuart Pegg and included a vocal solo by Paul Robbins during which time we were able to relax and focus our minds on Jesus and the people we would be bringing the message to during the day.

After the morning meeting (conducted by Major Ted Benneyworth of Derby Central) the band were again looked after by their billets for Sunday lunch we returned to the hall ready to march again, this time round Poole. As far as I could see, between watching my music and where I was stepping, we marched through the town, along the front of the harbour and back along the other side of the town, returning to the hall.

Well i'm the ring master! I have the outfit!

The weekend was concluded with a meeting on Sunday evening, the first part of the meeting was more in the style of a music festival which included a Euphonium trio “Sweetest name” by Andy, Martyn and Darren, a vocal solo “We are the reason” by Andy Ward and a trombone feature “Peter, James and John” Major Ted Benneyworth concluded the evening worship meeting. After loading up the coach the Band were able to enjoy a few more moments of fellowship whilst eating again before setting off home.

The band arrived back to Derby at about midnight – Tired, but knowing we had done our best for God.

Go on.... blow hard enough and you will get a note.
