Salvation Army Crest

Fun

Ian Hammond

Joined the band in 1967.

Ian is one of the few members of the band who was born into the Derby Central Corps. His grandfather was Bandmaster for 25 years and both his mother and father have been Songster Leaders at the corps. At the age of 15 Ian transferred from the young peoples band to the cornet section of the senior band.

As a student, studying for a maths degree, Ian played with both Portsmouth Citadel and Leicester Castle Bands. However, he still continued to return to Derby to play with the band and attend the home matches of Derby County. In time, he was promoted to principal solo cornet where he remained on the ‘end chair’ for 20 years. In 1984 he became Songster Leader to the corps’ songsters. He has led them on several foreign tours and conducted them at many prestigious Salvation Army events.

Outside the army, Ian has recently worked as a peripatetic brass teacher following his twenty year career as a systems engineer and project manager for Marconi Space and Defence Systems and British Coal.

He is married to Ceri, and has 2 children; Eleanor and Jack.
