Band visit to Guisborough

This year Guisborough band are celebrating their anniversary of 125 years. As part of their celebrations Derby Central band travelled up north and presented a festival on Saturday evening. Derby Central then led the meetings on Sunday.

This was an absolutely superb weekend, we know everyone from Derby Central thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we hope that the people of Guisborough also had a great time sharing with us.

As the band arrived we were provided with an excellent meal, with several choices to suit all tastes. My personal favourite was the Pavlova!!

The hall was full for the evening festival which included solo’s from David Purkiss (Cornet) Darren Willis (Euphonium) Andrew Jones (Xylophone) Jonathan Finnity (Flugel horn) Paul Robins (Vocal) a trombone ensemble and a male voice choir (four member of the band) we also heard a testimony from Martyn Page and a message from David Morton. The programme was very well received by the people of Guisborough and many of the band heard positive comments about the evening.

After excellent suppers and a good night sleep the band led the morning meeting, unfortunately one of the band (John Jordan) was too ill to travel with the band but had already prepared the sermon. John’s words were read to us by John Floyd and bought blessings to many. This meeting featured Guisborough singing company and songsters who both sang beautifully.

The afternoon meeting / festival started at half four and included solo’s by Martyn Page (Euphonium) Colin Sneade (Bass) we also heard from the four male voices again and Guisborough songsters and band. The message was brought to us by Graham Eacott.

The band were then provided with yet another scrumptious tea before heading off back to Derby.

This was a first weekend away for some of the band members and I can see from their “facebook” comments they all enjoyed a super time together. We were also pleased to have Ceri Hammond and Andrew Dickinson helping out the horn section, this weekend saw the retirement of James Hunter from the horn section, the band took the opportunity to thank James for all his efforts over the past six years.

This was an excellent weekend and the people of Guisborough were excellent hosts, we wish you well in your further celebrations for 125 years!
