Band Visit Wigan 2008
What a pleasure it was for Derby Central band to join with Wigan for their band weekend.
Derby Central band arrived at Wigan and were provided with a lovely tea, there was then time to relax and spend some time chatting with the people of Wigan and after a quick repair for broken tunic buttons and wonky poppies it was on with the festival.
The band started the evening with the rousing march “Faith is the victory.” The first half of the programme included a cornet solo “Caprice for cornet” which was played brilliantly by David Purkiss, a Euphonium solo “Travelling along” which was also fantastically played by Darren Willis.
Unfortunately, the Tuba solo “Aria from Magic Flute” had to be left out of the programme as the soloist was unable to attend the festival but our thanks go to Damian Wileman for stepping in and helping on the bass section.
Other pieces included “Fanfare to Worship,” “Melodies of Dvorak,” “Mighty to save” and “My strength, my tower.”
There was a short interval to allow the band time to gather their own strength again before the second half which included many lighter, foot tapping pieces. These were “Don’t let the Devil,” “Praising,” “El Es El Senor,” “The Mission,” and “Wonderful Day.”
The bible message was read by Major Ted Benneyworth of Derby Central which was preceded by a trombone feature “When I survey” and followed by a piece which is quickly becoming a favourite with many of the bandsmen “The Lord is Gracious.”
The evening was completed with a march “On the Kings Highway.”
It was lovely for the band to spend some time with Andrew Baxter who used to be a bandsman with Derby Central but now soldiers at Wigan, we would also like to say thank you to Adrian Wileman and Chris Carter who were guests with the band on cornet and Baritone respectively.
